چکیده

323 During pasture grazing, freshly harvested herbage (litterfall) is dropped onto soils from the mouths of dairy cattle, potentially inducing nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Although the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommends accounting for N2O emissions from arable crop residues in national inventories, emissions from the litterfall of grazed pasture systems are not recognized. Th e objective of this study was to investigate the potential of litterfall to contribute to N2O emissions in a fi eld study located on a pasture site in Canterbury, New Zealand (43°38.50′ S, 172°27.17′ E). We applied 15N-labeled perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) to the surface of a pastoral soil (Temuka clay loam) and, for up to 139 d thereaft er, quantifi ed the contribution of herbage decomposition to N2O production and soil N dynamics. Litterfall contributed to the 15N enrichment of soil NO3–N and N2O–N pools. Aft er 49 d, 15N recovery as N2O equated to 0.93% of the surface-applied litter 15N, with 38 to 75% of the cumulative N2O fl ux occurring within 4 to 10 d of treatment application. Emissions of N2O likely resulted from ammonifi cation followed by a coupling of nitrifi cation and denitrifi cation during litter decomposition on the soil surface. Th e emission factor of the litter deposited in situ was 1.2 ± 0.2%, which is not substantially greater than the IPCC default emission factor value of 1% for crop residues. Further in situ studies using diff erent pasture species and litterfall rates are required to understand the microbial processes responsible for litter-induced N2O emissions. Biochar incorporation into pasture soil suppresses in situ nitrous oxide emissions from ruminant urine patches.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from grazing animal excreta are estimated to be responsible for 1.5 Tg of the total 6.7 Tg of anthropogenic N2O emissions. This study was conducted to determine the in situ effect of incorporating biochar, into soil, on N2O emissions from bovine urine patches and associated pasture uptake of N. The effects of biochar rate (0-30 t ha(-1)), following soil incorporati...

Using 15N Dilution Method to Correct for Microbial Contamination When Assessing in situ Protein Degradability of Fresh Ryegrass

This experiment was done to investigate microbial contamination and in situ disappearance rates of dry matter (DM), N and 15N of fresh labeled ryegrass. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were labeled with 15N during growth in a glasshouse, harvested at 4th leaves stage and were incubated up to 34 h in situ in the rumen of 3 individually housed sheep. The animals were fed 800 g/d chopped alfal...

Comparison of the in situ degradation parameters of fresh and frozen-thawed 15N-labelled alfalfa and ryegrass

Degradation of dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) in fresh or frozen-thawed alfalfa and ryegrass was studied by using in situ technique. The forages were labeled with 15N during growth in a glasshouse, harvested at similar growth phase, and fresh (F) or frozen-thawed (FT) samples were incubated in the rumen of 3 sheep. There was no difference (P>0.05) between forage type (S) for the immediately s...

Nitrous oxide fluxes and nitrogen cycling along a pasture chronosequence in Central Amazonia, Brazil

We studied nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes and soil nitrogen (N) cycling following forest conversion to pasture in the central Amazon near Santarém, Pará, Brazil. Two undisturbed forest sites and 27 pasture sites of 0.5 to 60 years were sampled once each during wet and dry seasons. In addition to soil-atmosphere fluxes of N2O we measured 27 soil chemical, soil microbiological and soil physical varia...
